Suffolk Coastal Disability Forum

Suffolk Coastal Disability Forum is organising a Disability Action Day in Felixstowe on Tuesday, 5th July, starting at 10.30am.   This is to check out the access for disabled people to the shops and businesses in the town and the seafront gardens.

Members will check which shops and businesses in Hamilton Road are accessible for those with mobility difficulties or wheelchair users.  Check lists can be collected from the Triangle to record the findings.

The Mayor of Felixstowe, Councillor Jan Garfield, will be experiencing using a wheelchair in the Shared Space area from 2pm.  Another Councillor will see what it is like to manage in the same area, when wearing a variety of ‘glasses’ that show different sight problems.

Some members will visit the Seafront Gardens and the Promenade from the Town Centre.  They will be assessing whether the Pram Walk and other paths in the public sea front gardens are fully accessible to people with disabilities.

There will be an opportunity to try out the Beach Buggy outside the Leisure Centre – does it enable people to get onto the beach if they hire it?

And then meet at the Salvation Army, Cobbold Road (1 minute from the Shared Space) from 3 pm for a cup of tea and the opportunity to discuss the findings.

Anyone with an interest in disability issues is welcome to join in the day.  Mobility scooters and wheelchairs can be hired from Phillips Mobility Ltd, Hamilton Road, Felixstowe, 01394 272233.
