Preserving precious family stories
Many of us have family stories which we would love to pass on to our children and grandchildren. But how many actually get around to writing them down? Two Suffolk women are helping people save their stories in professionally written and designed keepsake books.
Family Stories is a local business set up by Caroline Putus and Elizabeth Aldridge who have been friends for over 30 years and have worked together on many writing and publishing projects. This experience, combined with an interest in people’s histories fuelled by stories of strong women in their own families, led to the creation of the business.
“It was my great aunt who sparked my interest in family stories,” explained Elizabeth. “At the end of the Second World War, Grace gave up her teaching job to run a 3-acre smallholding in Rutland, where she kept pigs, chickens, ducks and geese. But at the age of 44, her dreams were shattered when she developed a life-changing illness and became too disabled for heavy work. She wrote a book about her experiences, and I found it fascinating to learn about the past life of the elderly lady I remember from my childhood.”
Caroline added, “We know from our research that there’s a tremendous interest in personal histories but people often don’t really know how to record their stories in a way that makes them interesting and readable for others. We listen to people’s stories and help them sort through their memories. We write their story, add photographs and family mementoes and put everything together in a full colour, beautifully designed coffee table book.”
Family Stories customer Peter W commented, “Our family book is a very personal window on history and is so attractive that it’s easy to either browse through the highlights or read from cover to cover.”
