Local painter and decorator, John Durrell moved to Felixstowe just six months ago. Here he is to tell us about himself and his profession.
How long have you lived in Felixstowe and what is your favourite thing about the town?
I have lived in Felixstowe for the last six months since moving from Ipswich where I have lived since I was born. My favourite things about Felixstowe are the community spirit and being so close to the sea.
What is your current profession?
I am a self-employed painter and decorator (interior and exterior). I started my apprenticeship when I was seventeen and have been working now for thirty-nine years!
Tell us about your experience.
I have done City and Guilds and advanced City and Guilds. I started as an apprentice for Cubitt and Gotts and once qualified went on to work with Ingram Smith of Woodbridge. Since becoming self employed, I have obtained a large and regular client base extending as far as East Bergholt and Grundisburgh. I prefer to concentrate on decorating individual homes as opposed to commercial premises but have done a few shops in Woodbridge too.
Any jobs you are particularly proud of?
Whilst with Cubitt and Gotts and Ingram Smith, I worked at Ipswich Town Football Club (in Bobby Robson’s time) and also at Hintlesham and Seckford Hall, as well as the Royal Hospital Naval School in Holbrook. Diversely I have worked in churches and on the other end of the scale, in pubs!
What makes you different from other painters and decorators?
A difficult question! But my wide range of experience and the length of time in the profession makes me very qualified for any job. My customers always tell me how they’re grateful for the personal service I give them.
