Do you Have a Spare Room to Rent?

Solo Housing is a charity based in Diss, Norfolk. Their aim, since 1985 has been to help single people find suitable and affordable accommodation.

Individuals are referred to Solo Housing either by the local authority, self-referral or through other agencies and ‘word of mouth’. Many hundreds of single people have been helped through the scheme over the years.

One of the services offered by Solo Housing is the ‘Lodgings scheme’. This is currently operated in the South Norfolk, Waveney and Suffolk Coastal areas.

This scheme is totally reliant upon a steady supply of suitable landlords who are able to offer a room in their homes, where Solo Housing can help place a client who is seeking somewhere to live.

All single people who come to Solo Housing for assistance are seen by one of their homelessness prevention officers to enquire into their own particular circumstances, to establish how they can best be helped.

Solo also visit potential landlords who wish to be included in the scheme to establish what kind of accommodation they have to offer, and to ascertain the criteria they are looking for in a lodger.

The scheme is unique in that Solo Housing take great care to match a client to a landlord accurately to help ensure that the process is as trouble free as possible.

Steve Freeman is the homelessness prevention officer for Solo Housing covering the Suffolk Coastal area.

“There are many reasons why people face homelessness. They may have lost their job, a relationship breakdown, a partner or family member that has died/fallen ill leading to the loss of their home, and many others. People that come to us for assistance need advice on how to manage their situation.

The lodgings scheme with Solo Housing is successful due to the fact we meet with all parties involved which enables us to fully understand their situation and lodgings criteria.

This is a completely free service and neither party is obligated. It also provides the household with extra tax free income and we provide support to both parties.”

If you live in the Felixstowe area, and have a spare room to rent out, Steve asks that you contact him where the scheme will be explained to you with no obligation.
